This is why the park near Dow's Lake is a sanctuary for birds. Those dots peppering the picture are insect colonies hovering over the pond. Millions of them.

Scenes like these, inside a city's limits, are rare since many cities are resorting to fogging to reduce mosquito and inevitably, other insect populations to prevent the spread of West Nile virus. It's not the case in Ottawa though.

Organisations have been noticing declines in the insect colonies and bird populations. It's important to find out why this is. Areas in cities need to be ecologically friendlier to maintain the balance for preservation of ecosystems.
