Fortune Teller by BenoitAubry Fortune Teller by BenoitAubry
On Keefer Street Market in Chinatown Vancouver BC, a soothsayer helps a client investigate his future.

For this shot, I took a close-up reading of the table cloth which seemed to have luckily been an 18% grey. I got a f/1.8 at 1/60th on tri-X film. I waited for the kid to move out of the way long enough for me to steady myself.

I can see why this is one of your favorites! Gritty and grounded, yet sort of surreal. Love it.

Thanks for the fav :D It seems to be picking up lately. I was getting discouraged because people, the younger folks were thinking it was too old. 1997

Very good shot.
It would have been easy to blow out the highlights... but achieved a very nice lighting of the scene.
Well done!

Thanks very much! I was hoping, when I took the shot, to keep some parts of the street apparent without taking away from the main subject. The only solution I had to include all the elements was to take a reading straight from the tablecloth.

It's also interesting that the first proof I did of this shot on paper was developed with film developer by mistake. Although the container said paper developer, it took over 15 minutes to get an image to full blacks and the values of greys and the details were astounding. I'm think of experimenting more in that direction to see how some shots can be improved.

When I found this out, I tossed the contents from the container and made a fresh batch of paper developer for the next person who would use the community darkroom.

Has a lovely "film noir" quality to it. Too bad the client wasn't dressed to fit the rest of the shot. Boo to him, sayeth I. :giggle:

Typically wonderful example of your work, Mr. Aubry. Engaging. Pulls me into the picture. A+
